Wednesday lyric

Word.

Artist: Arcade Fire
Album: Funeral
Year: 2004

Crown Of Love

They say it fades if you let it,
love was made to forget it.
I carved your name across my eyelids,
you pray for rain I pray for blindness.

If you still want me, please forgive me,
the crown of love has fallen from me.
If you still want me, please forgive me,
because the spark is not within me.

I snuffed it out before my mom walked in my bedroom.

The only thing that you keep changin’
is your name, my love keeps growin’
still the same, just like a cancer,
and you won’t give me a straight answer!

If you still want me, please forgive me,
the crown of love has fallen from me.
If you still want me please forgive me
because your hands are not upon me.

I shrugged them off before my mom walked in my bedroom.

The pains of love, and they keep growin’,
in my heart there’s flowers growin’
on the grave of our old love,
since you gave me a straight answer.

If you still want me, please forgive me,
the crown of love is not upon me
If you still want me, please forgive me,
cause this crown is not within me.
it’s not within me, it’s not within me.

You gotta be the one,
you gotta be the way,
your name is the only word that I can say

You gotta be the one,
you gotta be the way,
your name is the only word,
the only word that I can say!

This song starts with a sweet-ass old school sounding 3 beat measure, with hammered piano keys accenting each beat, and an overwhelmed-sounding singer. after some cool emo fun it segues into a little rock and roll over the last line and some "la la la"ing.

Great song

holy crap

Fuckin Big Dog Bill Clinton gets in a little slapfight with Chris Wallace. He's been getting pounded by the wingers at ABC/Disney for "not doing enough" to "get" Bin Laden. And he brings up an interesting, and pertinent point, which I've hammered on for five years:

AT LEAST HE DID ANYTHING AT ALL. Which is 100% more than what Bush and his idiot crew did for NINE FUCKING MONTHS AFTER GETTING IN OFFICE. THEY DID NOTHING. Clinton tried.

You remember what Bush was doing? MISSILE DEFENSE SHIELD. Remember that shit? Motherfuckers. 9/11 was his goddamn fault because he pulled government attention away from terrorism. He lied about what he was doing for the 9 months until the worst terrorist attack in our country's history.

Know what's better? He fucking did a curtain call a few years later in the idiotic crap surrounding KATRINA. remember when we saw the cronyism in his government appointments? "Heckuva job Brownie."

Mkay. I'm a little fucking pissed, still, 5 years later. The fact that Bush is still in office, and the country is reacting with such a huge, collective yawn to the incompetence, corruption, greed, and destruction they represent us to the world with, makes me want to just jump in front of a bus.

on your mark, get set...

...War in Iran.

Global Research
Washington Report on Middle Eastern Affairs

And there's more.

Scott Ritter
Americans, along with the rest of the world, are starting to wake up to the uncomfortable fact that President George Bush not only lied to them about the weapons of mass destruction in Iraq (the ostensible excuse for the March 2003 invasion and occupation of that country by US forces), but also about the very process that led to war.

wednesday lyric

courtesy Propaghandi. Not exactly the gentlest poetry, but important nonetheless. I'll put up a fluffy happy one next week.

A friend of mine dropped me a line, it said, "man, I gotta run to the USA. I got no money, got no job."
She skipped out of Mexico to stay alive.
You've got a problem with her living here, but what did you do to help her before she fucking came?
What did the country do?
What did the people do?
I stand not by my country, but by people of the whole fucking world.
No fences, no borders.
Free movement for all.
Fuck the border.

It's about fucking time to treat people with respect.
It's our culture and consumption that makes her life unbearable.
Fuck this country; its angry eyes, its knee-jerk hordes.
Legal or illegal, watch her fucking go.
She'll take what's hers.
Watch her fucking go.
Fuck the border.

Some people have to stay and fight for survival in the country they live in while others have to leave to survive.
Corporations cross international borders all the time in search of people to exploit for profit and no one stops them.
They call it globalization.
On the other hand, the victims of corporate domination are told that they can't cross borders in search of better lives, and are forced to stay and deal with the social, economic and environmental messes the companies leave behind when they inevitably move their operations to places with even more "favourable business climates (re: lower wages, lax environmental laws, tax breaks).
Looks like capitalism and human-rights don't mix.

something to remember

Get Your War On.

Wednesday lyric

Did you know you can pronounce Wednesday wither with an ending "day" sound, or an ending "dee" sound? Both are acceptable.

Anyways. Here's a second week of Wednesday lyric (making this new tradition I just made up twice as long-lasting as every other one I've tried, except EXGF RU, if anyone remembers that) from one of the least-appreciated bands of all time, THE VANDALS:

I Know, Huh?
Hitler Bad, Vandals Good
The Vandals

I'm an expert on her cause I see her everyday
She's got one of those bedrooms you can see from the freeway
I know her brothers, her cousins and her Dad
Would not appreciate me getting on those CANS
Not from the same neighborhood,
Her brothers scare me but their sister looks so good

Sandra, I know, huh? You gotta' go home to
Make dinner and clean up and that sucks. I know, huh?
Sandra, I know, huh? You gotta' go home to
Fill up the pinata for you cousin's quincenera

And when we dance, the snare drum comes out of nowhere
But we're together, and they're playing our song
'Cause when she calls, I know I just gotta' go there
And when I get her in the mood, the tuba ruins our song

I go to pick her up but I just get stared down
They say hey hey guero what you doin' in this town
I got a mission so I don't care what they say
They think they're something just because it's cowboy day
In their neighborhood, her brothers scare me
but their sister looks so good

Sandra, I know, huh? You gotta' go home to
Make dinner and clean up and that sucks. I know, huh?
Sandra, I know, huh? You gotta' go home to
Put the cow stickers on Tio's van conversion

good government

In the hottest days of the cold war, when both East and West were planning for the worst, the American military had a frighteningly practical question: in the event of a nuclear explosion, how much radiation could a soldier withstand before becoming disoriented or disabled?

The Pentagon turned to the University of Cincinnati for answers. There, from 1960 to 1971, an eminent radiologist, Dr. Eugene L. Saenger, and his colleagues conducted experiments on 88 cancer patients, ages 9 to 84, exposing them to intense doses of radiation and recording their physical and mental responses. All but one of the patients were terminally ill and, with the exception of that young woman, have been dead for years. Most were poor; 60 percent were black.

so who was good?

"How dare you spin 9-11?"

Keith Olbermann had basically emerged as the most blunt and straightforward of American commentators. While he refuses in a lot of ways to call out the true malefactors after the terrorists, namely the multinational corporations and the government stooges that support them, he has not hesitated in using his pulpit to call out our most blatant criminals, in this case the President and his immediate supporters in power. The vice president. The Republican "leadership" in congress. The lobbyists. They all are covered in blood.

I remember 9-11. I remember waking up, and my roommate's boyfriend was sitting on the couch staring at the TV. The noise of the TV had woken me. I asked what was happening. He said, "Someone flew a jet into the World Trade Center". I said "No fucking way. I'm dreaming." and turned around and went back to sleep. I literally thought I was dreaming what he told me. Of course an hour later I learned that I'd been mistaken. I spent the next few weeks in a coma of sorts, unable to determine what why or how any of this had happened. So many dead. Such devastation. I had no idea what I should do. When the president gave his speech afterwards I was in the chorus of support. When, a couple days later, I questioned attacking a bunch of camels and tents in Afghanistan, I was shouted down, in one memorable encounter by my step-father. "How do you know?" he screamed at me, the emotion raw in his face. I demurred. People were blown to pieces, again.

After all of the pain the people of Afghanistan suffered, and after our president let bin Laden escape because he was pulling personell away to Iraq, I regained my nerve, and have never backed down from arguing against the insipid regime in power since. The re-election, however stained, hurt my soul.

But I've run into something I cannot reconcile. Olbermann in his spirited hectoring reminds us the "hole in the city" is still there, five years on. Five years later, nothing but mouthing of platitudes, as indeed many predicted, has occurred. The thing I ran into is this: one year later, New Orleans is still destroyed. It's a massive muck of destroyed homes and dreams. In four years, will we be wondering the same things we're wondering about New York today? The current federal administration has done hardly anything to help the poor folks suffering in New Orleans. Almost nothing. They're trying to cut back on what little, half-assed, bullshit they've done at all. Just like they're cutting back on caring for our veterans, the Congress of the President's party is trying to strangle those left homeless and destitue.

Is this the America you want to be a part of? Is this the society you want to support? Is this the government you believe in? I've heard a lot of well-meaning people say "we have to stand united". I say BULLSHIT. I say we don't have to stand united, we have to STAND FOR SOMETHING. United in what? The LIES of George W. Bush? Absolute, disgusting lies? Lies that sent thousands of our kids, and tens of thousands of "others" (you think Israel can blow its fucking nose without Washington's OK?) to be mutilated? Is that what you want to unite behind? Lies?

In four years, unless those in power or destroyed, we will be asking the same questions about New Orleans. Why are the widows and children still wondering what happened? Why are 3000 DEAD STILL NOT MEMORIALIZED? 3000 more. The people in power DO NOT CARE. And if you support them for "business" or "values" or "the lesser of two evils", you're a fucking idiot, and deserve to suffer endlessly. I'm not kidding at all. The existing regime has failed us, repeatedly, and with intention, and they will continue to do so if you believe their lies. A vote for the GOP is a vote for a 5 year hole in New York, for a five-year flooded New Orleans, for a 5 year war in a place that was nothing but the lowest-hanging fruit in a geopolitical game that started before our births and will continue til WE STOP IT.

So go ahead and say you voted for unity. Your unity vote is a sucker vote. It's an idiot vote. If you vote for a Republican, hell, if you vote for 80% of the Democratic Party, you're a sucker. Take this lesson from the 5-year anniversary of 9-11: The people in power will do anything to fleece you, and smile reassuringly while they do it. They'll tell you that disagreeing with them is "treason". And they'll make you feel stupid if you don't believe. If you don't know that by now, you haven't been paying attention.

today

you can say i'm trying to make political hay if you want. the people in power now, and their propaganda machine, are trying to re-write history.
never forget who was standing watch that day, five years ago. Bush failed, and has since tried to blame everyone else.

On the videotape obtained by the CIA, bin Laden is seen confidently instructing his party how to dig holes in the ground to lie in undetected at night. A bomb dropped by a U.S. aircraft can be seen exploding in the distance. "We were there last night," bin Laden says without much concern in his voice. He was in or headed toward Pakistan, counterterrorism officials think.

That was December 2001. Only two months later, Bush decided to pull out most of the special operations troops and their CIA counterparts in the paramilitary division that were leading the hunt for bin Laden in Afghanistan to prepare for war in Iraq, said Flynt L. Leverett, then an expert on the Middle East at the National Security Council.

"I was appalled when I learned about it," said Leverett, who has become an outspoken critic of the administration's counterterrorism policy. "I don't know of anyone who thought it was a good idea. It's very likely that bin Laden would be dead or in American custody if we hadn't done that."

Several officers confirmed that the number of special operations troops was reduced in March 2002.

That's got nothing to do with soldiers, people killed on 9/11, afghanistan, iraq, whatever. there was a guy working that day, and the time leading up to it, who failed to do his job. and some indeterminate number of our countrymen decided he deserved four more years, out of stupidity or fear.

today i remember all the dead that came from this...all the dead. mountains of death. is this the kind of human race you want to be part of?

wednesday lyric

in a new tradition i just made up right now, wednesday is now wednesday lyric day. If you have a song lyric you love, post it in the comments, point me to cool artists i've never heard.
this is one of the best pogues songs, hell one of the best songs, period.

Bottle of Smoke
The Pogues
If I Should Fall From Grace with God
Thanks and praises
Thanks to jesus
I bet on the bottle of smoke
I went to hell
And to the races
To bet on the bottle of smoke

The day being clear
The sky being bright
He came up on the left
Like a streak of light
Like a drunken fuck
On a saturday night
Up came the bottle of smoke

Twenty fucking five to one
Me gambling days are done
I bet on a horse called the bottle of smoke
And my horse won

Stewards inquiries
Swift and fiery
I had the bottle of smoke
Inquisitions and suppositions
I had the bottle of smoke

Fuck the stewards
A trip to lourdes
Might give the old fuckers
The power of sight
Screaming springers and stoppers
And call out coppers
But the money still gleams in my hand like a light

Bookies cursing
Cars reversing
I had the bottle of smoke
Glasses steaming
Vessels bursting
I had the bottle of smoke
Slip a fifty to the wife
And for each brat a crisp new five
To give me a break on a saturday night
When I had the bottle of smoke
Priests and maidens
Drunk as pagans
They had the bottle of smoke
Sins forgiven and celebrations
They had the bottle of smoke

Fuck the yanks
And drink their wives
The moon is clear
The sky is bright
Im happy as the horses shite
Up came the bottle of smoke

Listen to it if you can, you'll understand. sing along, it's awesome. if you're not bouncing around like a dork by the end you might well be dead.
